As a newbie blogger, the most confusing state is to decide which Blogging platform to choose. Though, most suggested platforms are BlogSpot, WordPress, Tumblr. Now, when we talk about creating a blog from the professional front, WordPress is a rock-solid choice. There are many things which you can do with a Self-hosted WordPress blog, which you can’t do on a BlogSpot blog.
BlogSpot and WordPress both offers free blogging platform which is a good way to start your blogging career, though certainly not the best. If you have been blogging on any of these free blogging platforms, read this article to know what are the limitations of using free blogging platform over self-hosted WordPress blog.
To make it clear I started my blogging career from BlogSpot and then I moved to Self hosted WordPress blog. As I mentioned above BlogSpot is a good blogging platform to start your blogging career, but for long run a self hosted blog is what you should select. Though in this post I will highlight why self-hosted, WordPress blog is better than free BlogSpot blog and also from free WordPress.com blogs.
If you are familiar with WordPress dashboard and looking forward to moving to WordPress, you should have a look at my previous post on Step by step guide to installing self-hosted WordPress blog.
WordPress vs. BlogSpot Blogging Platform:
As I mentioned above, I started my journey to Blogging with BlogSpot, and later I moved to WordPress. So, I’m aware of benefits of downside of BlogSpot, and here I’m not going to talk any benefits, as WordPress offer all those feature which BlogSpot offers.
Control over your blog:
This is one of the major reason I support self-hosted blog. Blogspot is owned by Google, and there are chances that they can delete your Blogspot account without giving you any warning. Even if you use the custom domain feature (Using your domain name ), chances are high that if spammers use feature Flag as spam and report your blog as spam. Google might remove your blog. This is something very common and by doing a quick search on Google, you will realize many bloggers faced this problem while using BlogSpot.
Winner: Self hosted blog
Search engine optimization:
Doesn’t matter where your blog is hosted, traffic is the first and last thing any blogger will look for. Search engine optimization in simple words means Optimizing your blog for search engines and getting traffic from search engine”. Comparing WordPress and BlogSpot, WordPress offers more options to optimize your blog for search engine where as in BlogSpot you are limited to certain settings.
Here are few posts which will help you to optimize your WordPress blog for search engine optimization

Plugins and support:
WordPress is blessed with features like plugin and a strong community to get support. When I am in BlogSpot, I spent lots of time editing my theme to show related posts and adding such features. WordPress makes your life easy using simple plugins for everything you need. By using plugins, you can achieve anything, and if not, you can take help of WordPress support forum to get custom code and extend the capabilities of your blog.
Here is a list of 2 recommended WordPress plugins.
Reputation :
This can be considered as human tendency or perception, that most of the people doesn’t see BlogSpot with a great eye. One of the simple reason is its free, and mass number of people are using it for Blackhat SEO, spamming and for affiliate landing pages. When talking about self-hosted blog, people thing that the person has paid for the service, and he is serious about his blog.
Theme and templates:
BlogSpot offers many templates but due to the commercial nature of WordPress, you will find unlimited free and Premium WordPress themes. Moreover, since you have FTP access, you can alter the complete look and feel of WordPress themes. BlogSpot is a good platform to start blogging with but when you are looking to make a name or career in the field of blogging, WordPress is the best choice for your blogging platform. One of the most common reason you might be stuck with BlogSpot is because you don’t know how you can move to WordPress.
I have shared a complete WordPress guide and here are videos that will help you to learn everything about WordPress. Once you are accustomed to WordPress (Which is easy), next task is to move your BlogSpot blog to WordPress. Now if you have a new BlogSpot blog with few posts and daily traffic less than 25-30, you don’t need to worry about making it a search engine friendly migration.
You can simply import your BlogSpot blog posts to WordPress, delete your BlogSpot blog and start blogging on WordPress platform. This simple guide will help you with the import of all Posts, comments and users from your Blogger blog to WordPress.
Many bloggers who moved from BlogSpot to WordPress, prefers to move all of their content from BlogSpot blog to WordPress. You might want to start a fresh which is good but if you are getting traffic on your blog, it’s a good idea to move everything to WordPress. You can then delete all those posts that you feel is outdated or not up to your current standard.
The process of migrating your posts, comments and users are easy. WordPress offer inbuilt Blogger migration tool to import everything to WordPress from BlogSpot, and we will look into it. By using Blogger export and WordPress import feature, you can easily import your posts from BlogSpot to WordPress. Guide to Import Blogger to WordPress:
So, I assume you are already, logged into your new WordPress blog and also logged into your Blogger account. One thing, which you need to do, if you are using BlogSpot custom domain, make sure you revert back to default BlogSpot domain.
You can always add custom domain again for the sake of passing link juice and let Google handle 301 redirection. (Fixing permalink is for different topic).
Once you are inside WordPress dashboard, click on Tools >Import and click on Blogger.
This will prompt you to install a plugin that will handle posts, comments and users import from your BlogSpot blog to WordPress blog.
So once you installed, click on Activate and run importer:
On the next page, you will get the option to upload the XML file of your BlogSpot. (I will show you how to export your blogSpot blog after this image.
How to export BlogSpot blog in XML format?
Login to your BlogSpot blog & click on Settings> Other. Click on Export blog under blog tools (Refer to below screenshot for better understanding).
This will open a prompt which says something like:
Export your blog into the Blogger Atom export format. You can do this to move your blog to another blogging service or simply to store your blog on your own hard drive. Don’t worry, your blog will still remain on Blogger until you delete it.
Click on Download blog & this will start downloading your blogspot blog in .xml format.
Now go back to your WordPress blog, browse the downloaded Xml file & clixk on upload file & import. This will start the process of importing your posts, comments, images, and links. (This may take some time depending upon the size of your BlogSpot blog)
The process is very simple, and WordPress import feature made it too easy for non-techy people as well. Once all your blog posts and comments are migrated, you can associate users with them. I also suggest you, go to Posts > Categories and click on Categories to tag converter and convert all categories into a tag.
Since imported Blogger labels are used as WordPress categories and I would prefer keeping only a few categories for better structu

Top 10 Proven Tips to Promote your Blog Online:
Social Media:
It has been proven effective lately to utilize social media to promote your blog. Social media sites like Twitter, Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, Pinterest Instagram, Digg, StumbleUpon and Delicious have more traffic because people usually visit these sites regularly to find content. First you have to create the account in that social media, After you have created accounts for each site take a few hours and start to fill up your Facebook page, Twitter timeline and Pinterest boards. Promoting your blogs by utilizing social media may take you more time because these sites are social sites. However, these actions can look like spam if you do not engage in social interaction. Another best idea to grab the audience is guest blogging already associated with a larger blog. It will allow you to share content within your niche with a whole new group of people. And the additional advantage is you can typically include 1-2 links back to relevant articles and traffic on your website. For the host, it brings diversity of authors and contents. Making interaction with the people whom are visiting your blog is the essential part. We have talked a lot about self-hosted WordPress blogs in previous posts, and there is no doubt that this presents a better blogging platform when compared to free blogging platforms like BlogSpot.com and WordPress.com.
However, many newbies who want to start blogging don’t want to make an initial investment of funds to create a blog. This is completely reasonable.
There are many blogging platforms which offer users the ability to create free blogs. If you are looking for a simple free blog, my suggestion would be to start blogging with WordPress.com or BlogSpot.com.
Once you have some blogging experience, you can advance and become more professional with a self-hosted WordPress blog.
BlogSpot allows you to create a free blog, but it does have limitations.
However, as I mentioned above, for a beginner it is a great way to learn how to create a blog and begin the blogging process.
This post is dedicated to the “beginners” who are new to blogging and would like to get started by learning the basics involved in the process.
Before I begin the complete tutorial, there are a couple of things you should know:
Firstly, BlogSpot is a blogging platform powered by Google. It offers you an opportunity to start a blog, but all your images will be hosted by Picasa (also part of Google). BlogSpot, in this sense, is a Google-centric blogging platform.
Secondly, if the goal of your blog is to make money and to have a blog that is professional in appearance, I would recommend that you create your blog using WordPress. It’s easy, and with the help of our exclusive free WordPress guide, you can create your blog in the next 60 minutes.
Step-by-step Guide to Creating a Free Blog on BlogSpot:
To create your free BlogSpot blog site, head over to BlogSpot.com and login using your Google account. If you don’t have a Google (gmail) account, you can create one for free.
For a first time user, you will see an option to use the identity from your Google Plus profile, or you can use your limited BlogSpot profile. I recommend using your Google Plus profile.
Once you are logged in, click on “new blog” or click on this link to directly go there: Create a free blog
Name your blog:
The first thing you need to do is add a name and select your domain. I suggest you read “How To Select a Domain Name” for additional information.
Avoid using your personal name as the domain name, and instead use some generic domain name that you can brand later with a custom domain.
You can then select a blog template (you can change it anytime), and click on “Create Blog”.
Now your blog is created, but you are not done yet!
There are a few settings that you need to set on your newly created BlogSpot blog to make it easy to use.
You are now on the BlogSpot dashboard where you will see your blog’s backend. From here you can go to “Settings” and make changes to improve your blog’s visibility.
Here is a screenshot of what you should be seeing:
From here you can click on “Posts” > “New post” and start writing your very first blog post!
But before you write your first post, I would recommend that you go to “Pages” and create at least one “About” page describing who you are and what your blog is about.
You can read my post on why you need an “About” page for your blog.
Most importantly, you should change your blog’s template as the default one is generic and boring (in my opinion).
Here I have compiled a list of free BlogSpot templates that you can download and install on your blog. Alternatively, you can go to “Settings” > “Template” and change the template from there.
On this page, you can also add a logo to the header of your BlogSpot blog, and add or remove various other features.
Once you have a few blog posts up and running, you can go to “Sett
